The Hogs Back Brewery is a small, family-owned brewery, situated in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. We first opened our doors on 4th August 1992 and have been brewing our award-winning range of traditional ales for 25 years, using the finest ingredients and brewing in small batches to ensure the highest possible quality.
We brew a wide range of styles including our flagship brand TEA (Traditional English Ale), the very popular Hogs Back Bitter as well as bottled ales including Ripsnorter and Hop Garden Gold. We have also developed a new innovative portfolio with the same focus on consistently high quality including Hazy Hog cider; Surrey Nirvana, our new golden ale; Hogstar new English lager; Montezuma’s Chocolate Lager, the only lager that contains real chocolate; Farnham White using our home-grown hops and London’s Outback, our first kegged ale. We have also introduced cans to our line-up for both Hogstar and London’s Outback.
Our hop garden
In the 18th Century, all the fields surrounding the brewery would have been covered with hop gardens and in 2014, we planted our own 3½ acre traditional hop garden, just across the road from the brewery.
We grow three different hop varieties, allowing us to brew a unique range of beers.
- Cascade – an aromatic hop from North America. We use English Cascade in our Hogstar English Craft Lager and our Surrey Nirvana ale, to give a fragrant character on the nose and a citrusy flavour note.
- Fuggles – a traditional bittering hop. This is the main hop used in our T.E.A [Traditional English Ale]. We brew T.E.A with 100% Surrey hops, either grown in our own hop garden or the Hampton Estate, 4 miles from the Brewery.
- Farnham White Bine – a heritage hop, which originally made Farnham the centre of UK premium hop growing for 150 years, and which died out 100 years ago. Working with the Hop Association of Britain, we have re-introduced this hop to its Farnham home. Farnham White Bine hops are not grown anywhere else in the world. We brew “Farnham White”, a single varietal golden ale, with earthy, peppery notes and a long, dry finish.
This is the first new hop garden in the immediate Farnham area for over 100 years and has become quite a local landmark, with many a traveller stopping to take a photo. Little do they know, our historic Farnham White Bine hops are not grown anywhere else in the world. We are now the UK’s largest integrated brewer and hop grower.
We have a dedicated Hop Estate Manager, Matthew, who looks after our hop garden, ably supported by our Head Brewer, Miles. Having our own hop garden means we are closer to our ingredients, which in turn makes us better, more knowledgeable and innovative brewers. It also makes for more sustainable brewing, which can only be good for the environment!
In September 2016, our hop garden was featured on BBC CountryFile.
